T. EDWARD JOHNSON 1924 - 2008 After a brave struggle Thomas Edward Johnson succumbed on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 84 years. Ed is survived by his wife Margaret (McCrimmon); younger sister Dorothy Sylvester of Carman; daughter Beth and son Glen, both of Winnipeg; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Evadine and Tandy Allen Johnson of Carman; elder brother George Johnson of Montreal; and twin sister Marjorie Holtslag of Carman. Born on January 16, 1924 in Stonewall, Manitoba, Ed was raised in Carman. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942 serving as a Trooper with the First Hussars (6th Canadian Armoured Regiment) throughout Northwest Europe. Ed first saw combat in France and was involved in the Liberation of Holland and the final battles for Germany. After the war he returned to Canada where he attended the Ontario College of Art, graduating in 1951. Ed married Margaret Rose McCrimmon in 1956 and went to work in the Commercial Art Department of Domtar Packaging, retiring in 1984. Ed was an enthusiastic and talented artist, known especially for his many portraits. He was a Life Member of both the St. James Art Club and the Winnipeg Sketch Club. Ed and Marg felt lucky to have enjoyed 23 winters in Victoria, BC before Ed's health prevented their going. In compliance with Ed's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A private interment of his ashes in Greenwood Cemetery in Carman, MB will take place at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff on the 3rd floor of the Grace Hospital for their kind and professional care during his extended stays there during these last few years. Thanks also to Dr. W. C. Schellenberg, Homecare and Veteran Affairs for their help while Ed was still at home. Donations in Ed's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200 - 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0K6, The Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB, R3J 9Z9 or a charity of your choice will be greatly appreciated by the family.
