PETER KATHLER After a lengthy illness, God called home our beloved husband, father, and opa on Saturday May 10, 2008 at the Morris General Hospital. Dad will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Elfrieda (Elly); four children, Robert (Carolynne), Richard (Susan), Monica (Doug), and Marilyn; grandchildren Michael, Allan, Jonathan, Brent, Laura, Paul, Ashley, and Victoria. Peter is also survived by his sister Tina; brothers Fred (Susie), Walter (Kathy), Rudy (Kay), John (Eleanor), Art (Margaret); sister-in-law Beth (John); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Anna and Mary, brothers Bill and Elvin, brother-in-law John, and sister-in-law Diana. Peter was born on October 26, 1923 in Liebenau, Southern Russia, and immigrated to Canada in 1924 with parents Wilhelm and Amalia Kathler, sister Mary, and grandmother Zietzer. They settled near Arnaud. On September 27, 1946 Peter married Elfrieda Unruh. They settled on a farm one mile north of Arnaud, and farmed there until 1988. Peter and Elly retired to the St. Elizabeth farm and enjoyed another 17 years together, before moving to Morris in 2005. Peter enjoyed so many things throughout his life. He was a poet, a writer, a translator, a beekeeper, a magician with a disappearing coin, a kite flyer, and a model airplane pilot. His involvement with the Arnaud Through the Years book was an important project to him as was the research for the Memorial Cairn. He was an agent for Red River Valley Mutual Insurance for many years. What was most important to Dad was his family, friends, and church. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at the Red River Valley Lodge for their care and kindness, to the nurses and staff at Morris General Hospital who also provided Dad with wonderful care, and Doctors Manness and Fraser for helping him through this difficult time. The funeral service will be held at the Arnaud Mennonite Church on Thursday, May 15 at 2:00 p.m. with interment at the Lichtenau Cemetery. There will be viewing at the Morris United Church on Wednesday, May 14 at 7:00 p.m. with a Devotional at 7:30 p.m. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Red River Valley Lodge, Box 507, Morris, MB R0G 1K0.
