WILLIAM (FLOYD) METCALFE It is with sadness, thankfulness and peace that we announce the passing of Floyd (Gramps) Metcalfe, who died peacefully on Monday, May 12, 2008 at the wonderful age of 94 years. Floyd was the beloved husband of Reta; father to Brian (Sally) and Lynda; Gramps to Jonathan (Lindsay) and Christopher. He is also remembered by his sister Eileen Wilson of Coquitlam, BC and sister-in-law Pam Smith of Seattle, Washington and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Floyd was born in Carman, MB on December 15, 1913, elder son of William and Alice Metcalfe. He attended a one-room country school in the Albert District where he completed grade 9. Floyd left Carman and for the next two winters attended Brandon Technical School for auto mechanics. He graduated in 1937 with superior marks. Floyd worked at a variety of locations in Brandon and later in Winnipeg as a skilled mechanic, finally retiring from Coca Cola Bottling Company after 24 years of dedicated service. Floyd and Reta were married in 1941 and had been blessed with 66 wonderful years of marriage. Floyd was a very caring, kind, generous, optimistic person who had a terrific sense of humour. He was extremely well-liked by young and old. Floyd gave of his time freely and loved all kids, his own, as well as those in the neighbourhood. Therefore, there was no doubt that he was very active in the Scouting movement. He certainly enjoyed interacting with his family, grandsons, friends and all with whom he came in contact. Floyd was definitely a people person as he enjoyed engaging in dialogue with all that he met. Floyd, Reta and family spent many terrific years at the family cottage in Ponemah, near Winnipeg Beach. He loved to tinker with projects that needed some fixing. Floyd was never afraid to get up on the cottage roof and replace the shingles, paint the inside or outside of the cottage, or build a tire swing at the back of the cottage for his grandsons to enjoy. Family life was very important to Floyd! Throughout his years on Mulvey Avenue, he was very involved with Neighbourhood Watch. He enjoyed meeting all the neighbours and keeping them informed of the latest information that would keep their area safe. Floyd was very active at Harrow United Church assuming the responsibilities of numerous committee commitments and maintenance tasks that needed fixing around the church. As per Floyd's wishes, his body has been donated to medical science. A celebration of Floyd's life will take place on Saturday, May 17 at 11:00 a.m. at Harrow United Church, 955 Mulvey Ave., Rev. Teresa Moysey officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harrow United Church Memorial Fund, 955 Mulvey Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3M 1G8 or to a charity of your choice.
