MADELENA WEST (nee HOUSSIN) Madelena passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Tuxedo Villa Nursing Home early Wednesday morning, May 14, 2008, at the age of 95. Madelena is survived by her brother Odil Houssin and sisters-in-law, Kay Houssin and Yvonne Houssin. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Stephanie and Achille; her husband, Ernest; her brothers, Andy, George and Mitchell and a sister-in-law, Evelyn. Madelena was born on December 18, 1912 and, except for some years in Edmonton and Vancouver, lived her entire life in St. Boniface. She and her husband Ernest were married in 1949 and enjoyed a wonderful and caring life together for over 46 years. When Ernest took ill in the early 1990s, Madelena's devotion to her husband was exemplified by her daily hospital and nursing home visits. They will be remembered as a wonderful couple who were completely devoted to each other. Madelena lived a simple life, but lived it with great spirit and strength. In her later years, as age weakened her physically, her indomitable spirit was still strong and vibrant. When she could, she told wonderful stories about her life with Ernest and the childhood days with her four brothers. Madelena took great pride in her home on Eugenie Street, so much so that it always brought a smile to her face. That smile will be missed. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Tuxedo Villa Nursing Home for the care given to Madelena during her stay. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home. Viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m. Madelena will be laid to rest in Green Acres Cemetery and a reception will follow the service. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends so wishing may make a donation to a charity of their choice as a token of remembrance.
