KAREN ANN STONYK (BLACKIE) November 4, 1949 - May 15, 2008 After a brief battle with cancer, Karen Stonyk - wife, mother, sister, teacher, friend, and kind, gentle lady - passed away at Riverview Centre surrounded by her family. Karen's love of her Savior was lived out daily in the lives of her family, friends, teaching colleagues and students. Her 58 years of life saw the consistent manifestation of her friendly interest in others, compassionate nature and unconditional love. She radiated joy, a friend to all. Karen was predeceased by her father Norman Arthur Blackie and mother Palmey Blackie. Karen is survived by her husband of 33 years Richard, son Mark (Rennie) and daughter Pamela. Karen's memory is cherished by her brother Norman Blackie (Wendy); brothers-in-law Brian Stonyk (Bonnie) and Ken Stonyk. Karen will be missed by her aunts Asa Macdonell (Jack), Bertha Parkhill, Unnur Brown (John) and Carol Kristjansson. Her step-mother Sheila Blackie. Her cousins Fina Macdonell, Patricia Parkhill, Rik Parkhill, Steini Brown, Rik Kristjansson, Janice Kristjansson, Mark Kristjansson, Diane Kristjansson, Kristian Blackie (Karen). Karen grew up on Dominion Street and attended Greenway, Sargent Park and Daniel McIntyre schools. She received her Associateship in Education (1971), Bachelor of Arts (1974) and Post Baccalaureate in 1995, all from the University of Manitoba. Karen was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Karen's teaching career included schools in the St. Boniface, Turtle River and Assiniboine South School Divisions. At the time of her passing Karen was an ESL Teacher and Librarian at St. George School in Louis Riel School Division. Karen was proud of her Icelandic and Scottish heritage. In her youth she traveled in Britain, Scotland, and Europe. She enjoyed recent trips with husband Richard to Nevada and Cuba. Shopping for shoes and jewelry was Karen's favourite pastime. Karen was involved in many church activities. In her youth she attended Broadway First Baptist Church, and was married there on August 2, 1975. Karen sang in the choir at Charleswood Gospel Temple, and enjoyed in recent years the worship and Women's Ministries activities at Immanuel Pentecostal Church. Karen's sweet gentle nature and ready smile gained her many wonderful friends who were a great support to her in her final illness. Her family wish to acknowledge the care given Karen at Victoria General Hospital and at Riverview Health Centre. A celebration service of Karen's life will be held at Immanuel Pentecostal Church, 955 Wilkes Avenue, at 2:00 p.m. with interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue, on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 with reception to follow at the Chapel Lawn Reception Centre.
