WALTER GIDYK On May 13, 2008, our dear husband, dad, and papa suddenly passed away. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Anne, and sister Claire. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 54 years, Donna, children Wendy (Glenn) Podolsky and Michael, and grandchildren, Ashley, Kristen and Tyler Podolsky. Walter was born and raised in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, spending his summers at his uncles' farm. He started his working career as a Federal Civil Servant as a draftsman. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1958, where Walter began work with the Department of Transport, Department of National Defence and eventually retired as Property Manager with the R.C.M.P. in 1987 after 35 years of service. After retiring, Walter and Donna spent 15 wonderful winters in Mesa, Arizona and also enjoyed travelling abroad. Walt enjoyed the outdoors and camping, and spent 20 fun filled years at the summer cottage at Star Lake with numerous friends and family. One of Walt's greatest pleasures was participating in the lives of his grandchildren-sporting activities, Ukrainian dancing, birthdays and graduations. Papa never hesitated to give up a weekend or the opportunity to drive us to many events, in town or out. And as everyone knows Papa, he was always on time. In his earlier years, Walter coached hockey and was greatly involved with the St. Boniface Riels. Many of his other hobbies included gardening, photography, and oil painting, Ukrainian baking/cooking, golfing and wood working all of which he continued avidly until the day of his passing. Dad was a talented man, and took great pride in all of his work. His caring and on going support will be deeply missed. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 21, Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. A private family interment will take place at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation. Walt, Dad, Papa - you are forever in our hearts until we meet again. GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME 982 - 7550

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I have known Walt all of my life. I was born and raised on the Southside of Swift Current, just a few houses from Walt. We both went to Oman School and in Grade 9 we went over the tracks to SCCI. I always remember Walt as someone who truly enjoyed living and always passionate about the things that were important to him. In my life journey, I have met many people, some friendships kept, and many fallen by the wayside - Walt was a keeper - I shall always remember him and feel privileged to call him my friend. Sincerely, Teresa (Fitzpatrick) Kelly. - Posted by: Teresa Kelly (Friend) on: May 20, 2008

  • We have been greatly sorrowed by the death of our dear friend Walter. He was highly respected and his culinary skills were exemplified by those delicious perogies which he was wont to serve up every January. We have been deeply honoured to have known him during the last 12 years and we will miss his fine humour and gentle manner which we have no doubt will be shared by all of his family, friends and acquaintances above. Our deep love to Donna remains strong and steadfast. Billie and Fred - Posted by: Fred Scott (Friend) on: May 20, 2008
