DONALD MCLAURIN LAMONT Q.C. On May 8, 2008 at the age of 88, Don passed away peacefully in the sanctity of LLANDUOG, his mountain retreat, during a very gentle snowfall. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy, his constant companion for 36 years, his mother-in-law Millie Parashin, brother-in-law Robert Parashin, nieces Alana (Ryan), Lorna, and, Sara. He was predeceased by his first wife Mary and their first child Carol Preston and survived by their daughter Margaret, son Donald (Thora), and grandchildren Signy and Krystjan. Also left to mourn are his older brothers Arthur (Lois) of Winnipeg, a retired meteorologist, and John, of Montreal, a retired engineer. He was predeceased by his younger brother Philip and sister Ruth. He is survived by a brother-in-law Geoff (Margaret) and sistersin-law Stella and Barbara (Barry), nieces Debbie and Susan, and nephews, Anthony, Nigel (Sara), Peter (Ann), David (Shelley), Bill (Terry), and David. Don was a very kind, gentle, soft spoken, thoughtful, and generous man who was well known for his honesty and integrity. He was highly respected by his peers. He was a humble, caring, loving, devoted husband, friend, father, and son. He was always honourable and fair. He was born in Riverside, Manitoba. As a child his mother, Ada, traveled by covered wagon from Gilbert Plains to the Bitter Root Valley in Montana. She became a teacher. His father Archie was a successful merchant and farmer. During his teens Don ran a winter trap line and helped farm in the area near Margaret, Manitoba. Later he taught in a one-room school in Regent. From 1941 to 1945 he was a flight lieutenant and navigator with the R.C.A.F. and did a tour of operations from bases in England. While overseas, he met and married Mary Schulp who was a WREN. In 1945 he attended Brandon College and was awarded a scholarship in Political Economy. He attended law school in Winnipeg and articled to the then Lieutenant Governor, E.K. Williams. In 1949 he graduated with honours from the Manitoba Law School and later took a public administrations course at the University of Manitoba. From 1953 to 1962 he was active in the R.C.A.F. Reserve as a legal officer and nuclear defense officer. He held positions of Examiner of Titles, Deputy District Registrar, Deputy Registrar General and District Registrar for Winnipeg, and in 1969 became the Registrar General of Manitoba. In 1981 He became the Inspector of Land Titles for the province of Alberta and later became a consultant. Don was instrumental in the automation of the Title System. He lectured on Real Property, at the Manitoba Law School and later gave lectures for the Manitoba Bar admission course. He gave numerous papers and lectures to various groups, contributed to a textbook on survey law and to other legal publications. He was a published author, enjoyed art, poetry, the arts, gardening, hiking, golfing, and curling. Don travelled extensible, easily making lifelong friends around the world. He was a humanitarian and philanthropist. He had a great love for children and their smiles. He will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched by the examples he set for loving and forgiving. Prayers will be said on Friday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 965 Boyd Ave. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, May 24 at 12:00 p.m. also at the church. Interment to follow in Chapel Lawn Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu thereof a quiet moment of reflection. I will always be there CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
