JACOB WIEBE It is with heavy hearts that the family of Jake Wiebe announces his unexpected passing on May 20, 2008, after a difficult but courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Laine, his beloved daughters Tannis (Dave Dalal) and Erin (Jess Guberman) and his precious new grandson, Tyler Jacob Dalal. He is also survived by his sisters, Agatha Wiebe, Helen Neufeld (Peter), Ann Wall (Henry), sister-in-law Helen Wiebe and brothers, Abram (Leonora), Neil (Kathy) and brother-in-law Bob Carswell (Norine), numerous nieces and nephews, and faithful companions his dog Reba and cat Jasmine. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Helena Wiebe, sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Martin Hiebert, brother John Wiebe and brother-in-law Dave Wiebe. Jake was born in Horndean, Manitoba, on April 1, 1935 along with his twin brother Abram. After completing high school in Winkler he moved to Winnipeg where he attended the University of Manitoba, earning degrees in Science and Education. Jake had a gift for numbers and went on to teach high school mathematics in the Transcona-Springfield School Division for 32 years, most of them at Murdoch MacKay. He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years. He travelled with his wife Laine to exotic destinations such as Kenya, China and Costa Rica. He spent numerous hours at the Wildwood Club where he golfed, played badminton and tennis, swam, and worked out. Jake loved to be active! A favourite summer destination for the last 32 years has been the family cottage at Big Whiteshell Lake. To his delight his self-taught handyman skills were always put to good use whether building additions, boathouses or doing general repairs. Jake also liked to play hard. He enjoyed boating, fishing, water-skiing, and if the wind conditions were just right, sailing. There are numerous cherished memories from all the time we spent as a family together at the lake. Jake loved life as a husband, a father, a brother and a friend, and we all loved him dearly. He will be truly missed but his memory will live on in our hearts. Memorial service: Friday, May 23, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Road, Winnipeg, MB In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate donations being made to a charity of your choice.

  • You are the teacher I remember and admire the most from high school. I still love math. class of 72 - Posted by: Maureen Duval (ex-student) on: Jan 09, 2013

  • Thanks, Mr Wiebe. I wasn't the best math student, but you looked at me at graduation and said "You'll do just fine." Those words were an inspiration, and I have indeed done just fine. RIP. - Posted by: David () on: Oct 22, 2012
