DERMOT IGNATIUS EGAN Peacefully in the early morning of May 22, 2008, Dermot Ignatius Egan, beloved husband of Mavis, father of Frances (and husband Robert), Martin (and wife Karen), and Sean (and wife Cathy), and grandfather of Glennys, James, and Francis, died of pneumonia at St. Boniface Hospital. Dermot was born on June 3, 1925 in Dublin, Ireland, but grew up in Belfast. Despite a passion for literature and poetry, he left school at 14 to serve as a youth-in-training with the British Post Office Telephone Engineers. He spent time in Wales working with the British Post Office and writing poetry. It was there that he met his future wife Mavis. He immigrated to Canada with Mavis and daughter Frankie in April 1957. Settling first in Corunna, Ontario, where his first son Martin was born in 1958, and then Toronto, where Sean was born in 1961. Dermot worked with Canadian National Telecommunications, spending 11 months helping to build the microwave system in the Yukon Territories. He began working for Canada Wire and Cable in 1965. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1969. Dermot's work with Canada Wire took him to such places as Israel, Pakistan, Venezuela and Mexico. He retired from Canada Wire in 1983. After retirement, Dermot fulfilled a lifelong dream by continuing his long-interrupted education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of Manitoba. He leaves behind many friends accumulated over years at Canada Wire, at the University and in the Saint Ignatius community. Particularly important to him were the Chicken Delight group; he looked forward to seeing them at every opportunity. While longing for Ireland, he never regretted his move to Canada and was grateful for the opportunities that his country affords his children and grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church on Stafford Street at Corydon Avenue on Monday, May 26 at 11:00 a.m. Private inurnment to follow at St. Charles Parish.
