EDWARD (TED) GEORGE LANYON

Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDWARD (TED) GEORGE LANYON Peacefully, on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, after a short battle with cancer, with family by his side, Ted passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 68 years. Ted is survived and will be missed greatly by his wife Fay, daughters Teresa (Ray) Meilleur and Jody Lanyon, grandchildren Briane, Kennedy, Reid and Ashe, brother Frank, sister Barb (Bob) Klassen as well as many extended family members. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law Arlene. Ted played junior hockey in Winnipeg, going on to play professionally in the U.S.A. His hockey career spanned from 1959 to 1973, and included playing with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL from 1967 to 1968. Ted played most of his career in the AHL, enjoying his time with the Greensboro Generals and the Johnstown Jets both as a player and a coach. In the off season Ted played with Molson's Canadian Fastball Team, winning the Canadian National Championship in 1967. The family returned home to Winnipeg in 1975 where Ted was employed with Canada Safeway, retiring after 25 years of service. Ted was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in November 1991 and into the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame in May 2002. After retiring, Ted and his family made several trips to Greensboro, NC to visit former players and many close friends. In his retirement years, Ted kept himself busy golfing, curling and watching the grandchildren carry on his enthusiasm for sports. The family expresses their thanks to Dr. Paul Daeninck and the nurses on the 6th and 7th floors West at the St. Boniface Hospital for their wonderful care and support. A celebration of Ted's life will take place on Monday, May 26, at Transcona Memorial United Church, 209 Yale Avenue West, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation, D1003 409 Tache Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R2H 9Z9.
