DR. GERARDUS (GERRY) JOHANNES BEKE On May 23, 2008, Dr. Gerardus (Gerry) Beke passed away peacefully at the age of 73 years. Gerry was born in The Netherlands on June 16, 1934. He immigrated to Canada in 1955, completing a B.Sc., from the University of British Columbia (1961), an M.Sc. from the University of Manitoba (1964) and a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta (1969). He was a farmer at heart and spent most of his career working as a research scientist for Agriculture Canada. He met his loving wife Joanne when she was his nurse during a stay in the hospital. She was his wife, care giver and best friend for 43 years. Dr. Beke is also survived by his son, John (Naomi); daughter, Tamara Hiatt; six grandchildren, Dustin Hiatt, Clarissa and Alexander Beke and Erica, Brian and Lorelei Roberts; a great-granddaughter, Karaline; as well as a brother, and six sisters in The Netherlands. He will be greatly missed. Dr. Beke is predeceased by his father, mother, step-mother and a sister. Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Dr. Beke has been planned for Monday, June 2 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Dominic Savio Roman Catholic Church, 14406 - 62 Street, Edmonton, AB. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations for the Hope Mission or a charity of one's choice.
