TY SHOJI MINAMIDE Ty Minamide passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Grace Hospital on Thursday, May 29, 2008, after a lengthy illness. Ty was a devoted husband, father, grandfather (Gichan) and great-grandfather (Odada) who will be lovingly missed by all. Remaining to cherish Ty's memory are his wife Elsie of 59 years; children, Heather Andrechuk, Janice (Manny) Singh, Lana (Murray) Vanderpont; sisters Keiko Hinatsu and Aiko Minamide; sister-in-law Mary Hinatsu; grandchildren Shabnam (Ejaz) Ferozdin, Adam and Owen Vanderpont; great-grandchildren Joshua, Noah, Elisha and Sarah Ferozdin; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Ty was predeceased by his parents, Kanjuro and Nao Minamide; in-laws, Kinya and Nao Hinatsu; brothers-in-law Kazuo and Yaichi Hinatsu; sister-in-law Hisako; and son-in-law Roy Andrechuk. Ty was born on August 21,1920 in Steveston, BC. In 1942, during the outbreak of the Second World War and the internment of Japanese Canadians, Ty's family were evacuated to Lorette, Manitoba where they worked on a sugar beet farm. In 1945 his parents and sisters chose to return to Japan while Ty remained in Winnipeg. Ty apprenticed in electrical work and later in jewelry engraving. In 1949, Ty married Elsie, the love of his life and together they raised three daughters. In 1955, Ty established his own successful business specializing in hand engraving of trophies and jewelry. The business was closed when he retired in 1988. Ty was a devout Buddhist and was extremely involved in the growth of the Manitoba Buddhist Temple. He held various positions including President, Deputy Chairman of the board of directors, as a Director of the Buddhist Church of Canada and an Advisor to the church. In his early years, Ty was a very active member of the Manitoba Japanese Canadian Citizen's Association. Ty was also a very talented artist who enjoyed singing and acting. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at the Manitoba Buddhist Temple, 39 Tecumseh Street, with Reverend Ulrich officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ty Minamide's memory to the Manitoba Buddhist Association or the Manitoba Japanese Canadian Citizen's Association. Chapel Lawn 885 - 9715
