ROSE SCHMID (LUTZ) -

Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROSE SCHMID (nee LUTZ) 1921 - 2008 Peacefully and with dignity, Rose passed, away on June 2, 2008 at Beacon Hill Lodge in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Rose was predeceased by, her only child, her son Klaus in 1966 and her husband George in 2002. She was born on March 29, 1921, in Lindenberg, Germany. After completing an apprenticeship as a bookkeeper in her hometown, she voluntarily joined the German Army in 1940 and served for four and a half years as a Nurses Aid during the Second World War in German army field hospitals in Russia and Italy. Upon her return to Germany in 1945 she rejoined the company where she had served her apprenticeship and in 1948 she married George Schmid. In the spring of 1956 the family decided to immigrate to Canada. George came to Canada first and established a residence in Geraldton, Ontario. Rose followed in the summer of the same year with their son Klaus. The family continued to live in Geraldton, where at first Rose worked as a Nurses Aid in the Geraldton Hospital and in the evenings baked fancy tortes for the local bakery. In 1960 she joined the Hardware Wholesaler Chochrane Dunlop Ltd. in Geraldton as a bookkeeper. In 1969 Rose and George moved to Thompson, Manitoba where Rose took the position of Accountant at the Thompson Branch of Chochrane Dunlop Ltd. Upon her retirement from Chochrane in 1986, George also retired and they built their retirement home in St. Francois-Xavier, Manitoba where they lived till George's death in April of 2002. The same year Rose moved to a senior's complex in Winnipeg. In 2005 Rose moved to the Alder House at Rosewood Village in Winnipeg. There she came to enjoy and appreciate the company of the 11 other residents of her house. Because of her deteriorating health she had to move to a nursing home in November of 2006. She moved to Beacon Hill Lodge in Winnipeg where she was treated with care, dignity and respect by the competent staff of that facility. Rose enjoyed the company of her many friends and acquaintances that over the years had come to appreciate the hospitality of the Schmid's and Rose's exemplary talent of baking fancy cakes and tortes. She will be missed by her relatives in Germany and her many friends and acquaintances here in Canada. In lieu of flowers, should one so desire, feel free to make a donation in Rose's name to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, Unit 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2. Funeral Services will be held on June 7, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home on 4000 Portage Ave., with internment to follow. Rose will be laid to rest besides her husband in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. CHAPEL LAWN 885-9715
