Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGORDON ALFRED COLLINS March 12, 1912 June 4, 2008 With sorrowing hearts, the family of Gordon Collins announce that he peacefully went to be with his Lord and Saviour on June 4, 2008 at Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Left to mourn his passing are his loving wife of 70 years, Isobel Collins, and their children, Robert and Norma Collins, Judith and Edward Davies, Peter and Donna Collins, daughter-in-law Lynette Collins, grandchildren, Kenneth Collins, Carol Collins, Brenda (Kerrie Boyer) and Cynthia Collins, and great grandson, Tristan Boyer. Also, left to mourn are his sisters in Kingston, Ontario, Gladys Collins, and Hazel Swerdfagen (Collins), and numerous nieces, nephews and their extended families in Canada and abroad. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Gordon in 1998, granddaughter Lisa Collins in 2006, his parents Thomas and Etta Collins, and four other siblings. Gordon was born in Cornwall, Ontario. Following his marriage to Isobel in 1937, they moved to Montreal, where he was employed by the S.S. Kresge Company. Gordon, Isobel and their four children moved to Winnipeg in 1949, when Gordon became the manager of the downtown Kresge store. They joined Bethany Baptist Church (later called Portage Avenue Baptist Church) shortly after their arrival in Winnipeg. Gordon opened the first K-Mart in Winnipeg, and managed the store until he was promoted to a buyer at the head office in Toronto. Upon his retirement in 1977, they moved to North Vancouver, where they enjoyed renewing relationships with friends from Montreal and Winnipeg, who had moved to the greater Vancouver area earlier. In order to be closer to their boys, they returned to Winnipeg in 1980. They served the Lord in Winnipeg at East Kildonan Baptist Church, River North Baptist Church, and most recently at Waverley Baptist Church. Gordon will be greatly missed by his wife, family and friends, as well as the staff members at the Poseidon Care Centre at 70 Poseidon Bay in Winnipeg. The family is so grateful to the staff at Poseidon, as well as at Victoria Hospital for the wonderful care they provided him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in his memory to Union Gospel Mission, Living Truth Ministries, or cancer research. Funeral services will be held at Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery on Monday, June 9, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.with interment to follow in Green Acres Cemetery.
