He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irene Plomp; his sisters, Marg Stabner and Rose Stabner; and his brother Wesley (Martha); his children, Ron (Gayle) from Hay River, NWT, Dwight (Ruth) from Grahamdale, Doug (Phyllis) from Winnipeg, Rick (Kathy) from Steep Rock and Delight (Dave) Knapp from Moosehorn; fifteen grandchildren (Inez Cook, Ty Cook, Christine DePauli, Lara DePauli, Lynette (Kevin) Unger, Janice (Jay) Cooling, Travis Cook, Darcy (Susan) Cook, Alysson (Shawn) Vidal, Sean (Gwen) Cook, Jonathan Cook, Valerie (Wendolyn) Bittner, Leighton (Dana) Knapp, Anthony Knapp and Kailey Knapp) and seven great-grandchildren (Shannon Unger, Cameron Cook, Jessica Cook, Nolan Cook, Grace Cook, Rebekah Cook and Hannah Cook). He was predeceased by his sisters, Muriel Plohman (Hans) and Laura Gall (Walter); his brothers, William, John, Herm (Chrissie), Arnold and Cliff (Rosella); brothers-in-law, Ed and Herb Stabner; and great-grandchild, Elizabeth Cook. Fred married his sweetheart, Irene Plomp, in 1940 and together raised five children while ranching in the Steep Rock area. They spent the first summer of their marriage haying on Peonan Point, sleeping under the stars and eating partridge for food. He owned Deerfield Supply General Store in Grahamdale and then began ranching to provide a good place to raise their children. Fred loved cattle ranching and horses, raising purebred Herefords and continuously striving to improve his herd. His cattle won many awards and he rarely missed a cattle sale. In semi-retirement, he enjoyed winters in the south and summers visiting with friends and campers at Elm Point Campground. He retired several times until finally moving into Lindenholm Place in Winnipeg in 1995 and finally to Calvary Place Personal Care in 2005. Fred valued his family and his community. He loved family reunions and looking up long-lost relatives or friends. He established the Lakeside Calf 4-H Club in the Steep Rock area, gave leadership to church and Sunday School activities, ran for election as an MP as a Social Credit candidate, and was an active member with the Hereford Association. As a young man, Fred put his trust in his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and never missed an opportunity to share the gospel of God's love and grace. Fred loved visiting with people, often traveling the countryside to enjoy a good visit and an invigorating discussion. While he loved to argue, especially about horses, politics, and theology, it was very important to him to be at peace with people. He often ended conversations and phone calls with a prayer and an I love you, or I want to see you in Heaven. Many thanks to staff at Calvary Place for the excellent love and care given to our dad, and to Dan and Marg Knight for their many visits. The funeral will be held at the Faulkner Community Hall, on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with a viewing prior to the service. Pastor Bill Watson will be officiating. Interment will follow at Faulkner Community Cemetery. Donations in memory of Fred may be made to Samaritan's Purse, 20 Hopewell Way NE, Calgary, Alberta T3J 5H5 .
