Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDNA GOWENLOCK March 6, 1921 June 7, 2008 Edna Gowenlock, nee Stirland, passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre on June 7, 2008 surrounded by her family. Edna had reached the age of 87 and was in good health before the sudden condition that took her life. She was predeceased in 1977 by her husband Alan and her granddaughter Karyn. Edna was a long time resident of Fort Garry and had been living at the Waverley for the past year. Edna was born in Doncaster England. She grew up in Yorkshire where her father worked as a coal miner. During the Second World War she worked building Lancaster bombers at the Avro plant in Leeds. She left her own family to come to Canada in 1946 as a young war bride having met Alan when he was stationed in northern England with the RCAF. Edna and Alan established a new life in Winnipeg where they made a home and raised their family. Her favourite times were the summers spent at the family cottage at Lac Lu. Edna never forgot her working class roots or her early life in the class-bound English society, and she retained a keen sense of social justice throughout her life. Edna is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and Terry Robert, son and daughter-in-law, Robert Gowenlock and Roberta Hechter, son Ronald Gowenlock, and son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Karyn Gowenlock. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Eric and Sean Robert, Karl Gowenlock, and Andrew and Ian Gowenlock; and her brothers, Jack and Stewart, still in England, and Michael in Cypress. If friends so desire, contributions in Edna's memory, may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society. Cremation has taken place and according to Edna's wishes no formal memorial will be held.
