BERNICE NOEL NICOLL 1919 - 2008 Peacefully on Monday, June 9, 2008, Bernice Nicoll of Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, passed away at Pinawa Hospital, at 88 years of age. She is survived by her children, Judy (Len) Hildebrandt, Betty (Ted) Ash, Bob (Jacque) Nicoll, Heather (Doug) Abrahamson; grand-children, Margaret (Jay) Rolfe, Heather (Luis) Cardona, Cory Ash, Doug Abrahamson, Andrea (Dan) Laliberte, Bobby Nicoll, Dan Abrahamson and Jason Madarash; great-grandchildren, Cia, Ethan, Willa, Diedre, Meteo, Emma, Kimberly, Anna, Eve and Nadia; her brother-in-law Jim (Joan) Nicoll; sisters-in-law, Nancy Wright and Edna Sherk, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Bernice was predeceased on October 27, 1943, by her husband Denis Bishop and on January 14, 1999, by her husband of 49 years, Bob Nicoll. Bernice was born in Winnipeg on October 1, 1919. Her early education was in Lac du Bonnet, continuing in Winnipeg where she graduated from St. Johns High School. She worked at Eatons Mail Order and later at the United Services Centre. She married her husband Denis in 1939. He died in the war in 1943. She married Bob on June 6, 1949. Together they lived in Lac du Bonnet, Dauphin and Winnipeg. Bernice excelled in athletics in high school. She became an avid curler enjoying both the fellowship and the competitiveness of the game. Her home was filled with curling trophies including a silver plate recognizing her team's winning of the City of Winnipeg Championship in 1948. She served as president of the Pembina Curling Club. During her life, Bernice was involved in many service organizations including the Royal Canadian Legion and Anglican Church Women. She supported numerous charitable organizations and causes. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Bernice was an equal partner in building a home in Dauphin and two homes in Lac du Bonnet. It would not be uncommon to find her sitting in the rafters hammering nails or clearing brush for the family cottage which Bob and Bern also built together. The cottages and homes became the heart of family activity where children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoyed years of swimming, exploring, tobogganing and skating on the Winnipeg River. In recent years Bernice kept active by pouring over crochet patterns with her neighbour and good friend, Cora. She produced afghans for friends, families and charities. These will provide comfort to all of us in the days ahead. Bernice was an enthusiastic cribbage player. No visit to her home was complete without three nail-biting rounds of crib! The family wishes to extend our appreciation to the staff of Pinawa Hospital for the excellent care that they extended to our Mother, to the home care workers for their help and kindness and to the very special friends and neighbours for their love and support. A memorial service will be held at St. Johns Anglican Church in Lac du Bonnet on Friday, June 13 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lac du Bonnet Community Centre or a charity of your choice.
