LAVERNE (LYNN) JOHN KLASSEN Suddenly and unexpectedly on June 6, 2008, at St. Boniface Hospital, Laverne passed away at 57 years of age. Laverne was born on September 17, 1950, at the old Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Laverne was predeceased by his grand-parents, his niece Kelsie in 1997 and his father John in 2004. Laverne is survived by his children Jenah and Justin; his loving mother Edna; sister Val (Murray), brother Rory (Dar), sister Leslie (Bill). He is also survived by his nieces Tammy (Harry) Brauner of Florida, Tatum Lee of Saskatchewan, Donna (Dave) and Kaitlin Klassen. He is also survived by his great-nephew Landon Brauner, great-nieces Kadie and Kennedy Brauner of Florida. Laverne started working at a young age with his Dad on construction. In 1977, Laverne relocated to Yellowknife to work as a staff councilor with teens at Akaitcho Hall. He loved the challenges these kids presented and especially the camping trips to Great Slave Lake. Laverne then travelled cross-country to St. John's, Newfoundland and in June 1997 earned a degree as a Computer Support Specialist from Cabot College. On his return to Winnipeg, Laverne found employment once again as a staff councilor at the Selkirk Healing Center. Working with kids was his calling in life. He enjoyed this work very much and cherished the friendships he made while working there. At the time of his passing Laverne was employed at Wal-Mart (Regent Avenue Store). Laverne enjoyed his work and the camaraderie with fellow staff. Laverne's passion was camping and fishing, second only to hockey. In his youth he lived, breathed and ate hockey. To say the least, Laverne was very disappointed with the outcome of this year's Stanley Cup. The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at Wal-Mart for the care, compassion and friendship shown to him during his employment. Laverne was proud to be an employee of the Wal-Mart team. The family would also like to thank the good Samaritans and the Emergency Response Teams who came to Laverne's aid. A special thank you to Chris, Kent and Catherine at Concordia Hospital, and to the Nurses and Doctors at MICU at St. Boniface Hospital and a special thank you to Marcel. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald St. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. HOW DO YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART? The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 680 Archibald Street 253-5086

  • Laverne it's hard to believe that 13 years ago today you passed, where does the time go. Your funeral held on Friday the 13th and so many people came to pay their respects, even your friends from Yellowknife, and the guys from construction, what a nice surprise. Val and I were sharing many memories about you yesterday. We had to laugh when we thought about our time at Fun Mountain, what a blast. Our many weekends on Ralph Beach and Eleanor Lake. What fun we had. The times we spent at Chi Chi’s. Your love of Bill’s cooking. So many memories. The fun we had at Val’s place, going across the line then hanging out in the pool. The World is pretty messed up right now and probably will be for a while so you are not missing out on anything. RIP Brother, give hugs to Mom, Dad & Kels, Love Les & Val - Posted by: Leslie Worthington & Val Lee (Sisters) on: Jun 06, 2021

  • There are still times I will be driving and swear I see you, some days it doesn't seem real that you are gone. This has been a crazy year and I have reflected a lot on our final 'chat' at St B before your heart stopped for the last time. I meant what I said! You became a grandpa this year to the sweetest little girl. I am sure you knew that already. Watch over everyone that you love! P.S I came across some of your old hockey cards and memorabilia and have tucked some away for your grand daughter and some is going to Larry and Barb. I know you are happy someone will enjoy it.
