Born: Jun 02, 1932
Date of Passing: Jun 06, 2008
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryARTHUR DONALD (DON) MARTIN Don passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Health Sciences Centre on Friday, June 6, 2008. Don was born June 2, 1932 in Hnausa, MB. Leaving to cherish his memories are his beloved wife Benna of 54 years, son Garth (Cindy), son Glen (Lisa), daughter Sandra, and daughter Sharon (Les); 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn him are his sister June, his brothers Leonard and Brian and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Gudrun and Gunsi Martin. Don joined the RCMP in 1950, later went into sales of farm equipment, investments and then real estate. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to own and operate a variety of businesses such as the Shoreliner Motel, Harbour Hobbies and the Gimli Theatre. He loved to fly in earlier years; in later years his main hobby was to paint landscapes in his home art studio. He particularly loved to paint the beautiful fjords and mountains of Iceland. Dad's most favourite times were spent with his family. He shared his love of life, was a great listener, and always had some wisdom to share. Dad could never get enough hugs and kisses from his kids and grandchildren. He will be missed by all, but has left a legend for us to carry on. Don will be remembered most for his willingness to help anyone in their time of need. He helped many a person on their road to recovery through the AA program. He was very active in his community; implementing Citizens on Patrol, singing in various choirs, was instrumental in establishing the Gimli Public Art Committee and was a long-time member of the Gimli Art Club. As per his request a formal funeral will not take place. Special thanks to Dr. R.C. Patel and staff at Gimli Hospital and HSC for their wonderful care provided, and for the support and prayers that were shared with our family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Kidney Foundation or the Gimli Lutheran Church. And may there be no sadness of farewell when I embark, I hope to see my Pilot face to face when I have crossed the bar. Goda nott pabbi min - till we meet again. neil bardal inc 949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca

We will dearly miss Don. He was such a gentleman and a gentle person. I served on the Gimli Public Art Committee, and he was always so kind and pleasant to be with, and Ron remembers it was Don who was his mentor in joining the Gimli Art Club, and so very helpful to him. Even when he wasn't well, he always smiled and said he was okay. Another page is turned in the history of Gimli.
