GLEN BURTON GALLAGHER Glen Burton Gallagher, born December 25, 1925, passed away at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, on June 11, 2008, after several years of bravely fighting cancer. Glen is survived by two sons, Larry (Cairns, Australia) and Ken (Bonnyville, AB) and their wives Barbara and Mary; daughter-in-law Terri; nine grandchildren, Scott, Erin, Shelley, Jessica, Kelly, Tim, Glenn, Kaatrina, and Anneke; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Flynn, and Cooper. He was predeceased by his wife Doris, father Fred, mother Bertha, sister Dorothy, and son Neil. Glen spent most of his childhood in Bradwell, SK. Growing up, he enjoyed the small-town life, particularly curling with his father, Fred, and horse-riding with friends. Shortly after beginning his career with the CNR, Glen met Doris, Bradwell's new schoolteacher, and the two were married in 1947. Glen's work in the 1950's as a station agent took the young family to several small towns in Saskatchewan, including Glenbush and Rabbit Lake. In 1961 he was promoted and the family moved to Saskatoon where he worked as an operator and dispatcher. Glen's career with the CNR continued to move forward and in 1970 he took a promotion to Winnipeg, then on to The Pas in 1974, and finally to Saskatoon in 1977, where he was the Chief Superintendent of the Prairie Region. Glen retired from the CNR in 1980. He then took a position in Vancouver with the Canadian Transport Commission where he worked for six years as an Accident Investigation Officer. In 1987 Glen and Doris settled in Glenwood Village, a townhouse community in Surrey, BC. They lived happily amongst friends at Glenwood until 2005 when failing health required them to move to Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence in Winnipeg. Glen was a railroader through and through, dedicated to his work with the CN. He was also dedicated to the CN social life, and GBG , as many of his railroad pals affectionately knew him, was always ready for the next get-together or celebration that he frequently enjoyed with his many friends. His great sense of humour, and that Irish twinkle in his eyes, made him a joyful blessing to friends and family alike. Glen also had a strong love of horses since childhood, and some of his happiest years were spent during his retirement in Surrey, BC, where with the help of some good friends, he owned and raced standard-breds at the Cloverdale track. All who knew Glen were touched by his warmth and charm, and even his quick Irish temper will always be remembered with smiles, love, and laughter. He was a strong, caring father and a loyal, loving husband. Family and friends will greatly miss him. The family would like to thank St. Boniface Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, for providing such fine care during Glen's final days. A family memorial service will be at a later date. Remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 187, in Glen's memory. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
