LIDA DeROSE It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lida DeRose, on June 11, 2008 with her family by her side. Lida was predeceased by her parents Palma and Luigi Scarpelli; husband Luigi DeRose; sisters, Giovannina, Maria, Carmelina, Beatrice and Genoeffa; son-in-law Gino Giardino and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Remaining to forever cherish Lida's memory are her two daughters Giovanna (Nina) Giardino and Maria Christina Sgambato; son-in-law Frank Sgambato; grandchildren, Tina Miller (Paul), Sandra Romani (Mike), Felice Sgambato (Kim), Joey Sgambato (Sarah Evans); great-grand-children, Aidan and Isabella Romani; sisters-in-law, Adelina Imbrogno, Amalia Falcone (Italy) and Matlide DeRose and several close nieces and nephews. Lida was born in Lappano, Cosenza, Italy on September 1, 1918. In 1941, at 23 years of age, Lida married Luigi DeRose and had two daughters. In 1954 Luigi immigrated to Winnipeg to make a life for him and Lida, and their two children. In 1965, after 11 years, Lida and her youngest daughter Maria came to Canada to be reunited with Luigi and their eldest daughter Nina. Lida lived a full, healthy life, and was fortunate to have been able to take care of herself as well as others until just recently. She never took the time to worry about herself, but worried endlessly for the rest of her family. Although Lida did not learn to speak English she was always able to communicate with her neighbours and friends, mainly through food and her avid gardening... Mangia, Mangia was her favourite phrase. She will fondly be remembered for her tomato garden, her selflessness, her generosity and her big smile. Even in the last few days, when her body had been taken over by illness she continued to smile and worry about everyone else. Lida was a loving wife, mother, nana, great-nana, cousin, aunt, great-aunt, neighbour and friend. Cara mamma e nana sarai sempre nei nostri cuori. The family would like to thank all of the relatives and friends for their daily support and visits to the hospital over the last month. They would like to thank close friends, Egidio and Franca Siciliano, for their love and special relationship with Lida. Additionally, a thank you to Megan and Trent, who were special neighbours and close to Lida's heart. The family would also like to thank Father Sam for his visits and spiritual support. And finally a big thank you to the 5th floor staff of the Grace Hospital, with a special thanks to Maria and Debbie for taking care of mom and nana during the last month. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7. Prayers will be held on Monday, June 16, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. also at Holy Rosary Church, followed by entombment at the Assumption Chapel Mausoleum, 3990 Portage Avenue.
