RUTH SCHWARTZMAN May 29, 1916 - June 11, 2008 Beloved mother and grandmother, Ruth passed away peacefully, in Winnipeg, on June 11, 2008, one week after her 92nd birthday. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons Edward and Victor; her daughter-in-law Madeline; and her grandchildren, Cary and Kathryn. Ruth will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family, former colleagues and her many friends in the United States. Ruth was predeceased by her loving husband of over 50 years Sidney; and was predeceased by her siblings, her sisters Ida, Rose and Gertrude. Ruth was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. Her politics were forged during the Depression, and she remained politically involved all her life. She was always the idealist, working for peace, fighting the great fight to improve the lives of workers. She also was dedicated to improving the lives of women everywhere. Ruth wanted to make the world a better place-and by her presence alone she did. In her strength and generosity during the last five years, she became a role model for all of us on how to grow old gracefully. The family would like to thank the staff at the Portsmouth Retirement Community, The Sharon Home, and all the homecare aides and nurses who made Ruth's last five years in Winnipeg so wonderful. Their services extended her life. A memorial reception will be held on Tuesday, June 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Lissa Donner will sing, and we hope to show some home movies of Ruth when she was not yet gray. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth's name may be made to the Women's Health Clinic, A - 419 Graham Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 0M3; or the Labor Studies Program, 117 Isbister, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 2N2.
