OLGA CHAYKOWSKI (LYSYK)
Date of Passing: Jun 24, 2008
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryOLGA CHAYKOWSKI (nee LYSYK) Peacefully in her sleep, Mom (Baba) passed away June 24, 2008 at the age of 89. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her children Marianne, Michael (Emily) and Gregory (Christine); her grandchildren Charlene (Rick), Chris, Jason, Katarina, Nicholas, Natasha, Danielle (Andrew), Jillian; great-grandchildren Cassandra and Stephanie, and Freddy whom she welcomed as a special addition to her family. Olga was born on the family farm in Mundare, Alberta on February 3, 1919; the youngest of seven children born to Semeon and Maria Lysyk (all have predeceased her). Olga later made her home in Winnipeg when she married Steve Chaykowski on June 4, 1944. Steve and Olga shared a wonderful life for 49 years before he predeceased her on May 23, 1993. A few years after Dad passed away, Mom moved from the family residence on Atlantic Avenue to the Amber Meadows Retirement Residence where she made many new friends; of special mention and deserving of many thanks, is her friend and neighbour Angie Weiss who always looked out for Mom. Olga and Angie were one of the first residents of Amber Meadows and together formed a special friendship. Mom had a quiet demeanor; she had a gentle voice, a kind heart and most often, would only offer her opinion when asked. She had a remarkable memory and had a unique talent for remembering special dates; she would never forget a birthday or anniversary. Mom loved country music and some of her fondest memories were made with her daughter Marianne, when they attended the concerts of favourite performers: George Jones, Tommy Hunter, and Tom Jackson to name a few. She also loved to go for car rides with Marianne, especially when it would include a stop at the local coffee shop for a cappuccino. Mom had simple needs and expectations, never complained and always lent an ear to those who needed to be heard. We will all miss her greatly. The family would like to thank the staff of Amber Meadows, who though over the years has changed some, have always provided Mom with a safe and friendly living environment. Mom considered you all her second family. A special thank you to the attending constables of the Winnipeg Police Service and Lynn from the Chief Medical Examiner's office for your professionalism and compassion; it was so very much appreciated at a difficult time. In keeping with Mom's wishes cremation has taken place with a private family interment. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 27 at 2:30 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the CNIB. Vichnaya Pamyat Glen Eden Funeral Home 338-7111
