MARLENE VICTORIA SCHMIDT (nee DERKSEN) May 24, 1938 - June 25, 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marlene Schmidt on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Riverview Health Centre. Predeceased by her mother Mary, father John and brother Art, Marlene will be lovingly remembered by her husband Henry; children, Allan (Cheryl) Schmidt, Connie (Trent) Leishman and Michelle (Rudy) Schirrmeister; grandchildren, Logan, Charlee and Jaxon; brother John (Marilyn) Derksen; niece Jennifer; nephews Ryan and Darren and many dear relatives and friends. Marlene was born in Winnipeg, grew up on a farm near Oak Bluff, Manitoba and graduated from the Mennonite Collegiate Institute. After moving to Winnipeg, she married Henry, her husband of 49 years, and lovingly raised her family. She later gave generously of her time by shuttling seniors and becoming involved in the church. She enjoyed working at Prime Fasteners and Print It for many years. Marlene's passion was hosting dinner parties for family and friends. There were never less than two home-baked desserts and no one left hungry. A lover of life, she took great pleasure in the company of her grandchildren and looked forward to vacationing in Mexico every year. Marlene was a kind and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was taken from us far too soon, and her absence will always leave an empty place in our hearts. With no more pain, she is free to fly (and to dance on tables). The family would like to thank Marlene's health care givers over the years with a special thanks to Maribeth and Riverview Health Centre, and all of the family and friends that visited her. She appreciated your kindness and support through a difficult time. A celebration of Marlene's life will be held on Monday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marlene Schmidt's memory to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, Room 1160, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
