JOSEPH GORDON PHILLIPS 1917 - 2008 It is with great sadness that the family of Gordon Phillips announces his passing on June 24, 2008 at the age of 91. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Helen (née Craig), and his brothers Herb and Edward. A lifetime Winnipegger and graduate of St. John's High School, Gordon worked in the building trade industry most of his adult life, for many years at Alsip Brick and Tile. He took it as his personal mission to show his bride the world, and he and Helen travelled the continent, first just the two of them, later joined by nephew Gordon, who had come to live with them after the death of his own parents. Always handy with tools, Gordon created an elaborate model train panorama that provided endless hours of pleasure for him and the youngsters who were lucky enough to be invited to join him in the basement. In the summer he put his green thumb to good use, and in the winter he turned to reading, primarily history, and his coin collection. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, uncle and friend who was gentle and generous, patient and understanding, and whose sense of humour never failed to surprise. The family would like to thank Home Care, and especially Lisa, for the kindness shown not only to Gordon but to Helen in these last few years. Gordon leaves behind his nephew Gordon Shillingford and his wife Karen Haughian and son Griffin, niece Bonnie Buhler and husband John, nephew Bill Telford and wife Cheryl, nephew Douglas Phillips, and niece Helen Craig. The family will be holding a private memorial service. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to Westworth United Church or to CancerCare Manitoba.
