ALEXANDER STEWART HUTCHINGS Stewart died peacefully in his sleep on July 1, 2008 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 88 years. He is survived by his children Sandy (Betty), Susan (Jim Shaw), Richard (Liz); daughter-in-law Mona; his grandchildren Beth, Jamie, Jennifer, Sarah, Kate, Roy, Sam and Jack; and his great-grandson Nathan. He was predeceased by his wife Rhoda, his father and mother, Ernest and Hazel, his brother Ted, and his second son John. Stew was born in Winnipeg on February 24, 1920. He grew up in Winnipeg and had many fond memories of school and friends here. He received three years instruction in Science at the University of Manitoba before going overseas to fight in the Second World War. It was while at university that he met his soul-mate, Rhoda, and they married in 1942. After the war, he and his brother Ted established Hutchings Glass, a successful glassware business which they managed until retirement in 1984. He was a true Gentleman (as in 'gentle man'). He was honest and true, always ready to be of service to others, and quiet about his accomplishments. Stew always woke up happy and kept that disposition all day, every day. Stew deeply loved his family and was always keenly interested in all of their activities. He loved to play endlessly with his grandchildren. Summers at Lake Malachi were also a source of much pleasure for Stew. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at 11:00 a.m., at the Cathedral Church of Saint John, 135 Anderson Avenue, Winnipeg, with The Very Reverend R.J. Osborne officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stew's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2. The family extends its deepest gratitude to Stew's caregiver Gloria, and to the nurses on the 5th floor of the Grace Hospital for their exceptional care, compassion, and support.
