SIMONE DOMEY (HAAKONSEN) (nee LAROSE) Peacefully, on Friday, July 4, 2008 Simone passed away at Extendicare Tuxedo Villa at the age of 91 years. Simone will be sadly missed by her daughter Ingrid and husband Ray of Winnipeg, grandchildren, Stacey (Chris) and Darren (Leah), her nieces and nephews, and her special friends and staff at Tuxedo Villa. Simone was born on February 21, 1917 in Shawinigan, Québec, the daughter of Alfred and évelina Larose. Simone was the youngest of the family, following sister Jeannette and brothers, Roméo and Lucien. Simone received her early education and high school diploma at Couvent des Ursulines. It was there that she learned to play the piano beautifully and developed a life long love of music. Simone loved the outdoors; her favorite sports were tennis, swimming and skiing. At the age of 20 years, Simone met the love of her life, Haakon Haakonsen ( Hokie ), who had immigrated to Canada from Norway at the age of two. They married on September 20, 1941, while Hokie was in his second year of Electrical Engineering at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. Daughter Ingrid was born in 1945 and a few years later, the family moved to Winnipeg, where Hokie had taken a position of Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Manitoba. In November 1964, Simone's beloved Hokie succumbed to ill health. Simone then became a bookkeeper for the Manitoba Telephone System. Years later, Simone remarried and was widowed three more times in the years spanning from 1970 1996. After living seven years in a St. Boniface apartment, Simone's final move was to Extendicare Tuxedo Villa, which became her home for the last five years of her life. She adjusted quickly to life there, and was often seen playing poker, sharing stories, and trading jibes with her new friends. Simone will be fondly remembered for her independent nature, feistiness, quick wit and sense of humor, and for her generosity and her love of her family. In keeping with Simone's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life and internment will take place at Thomson In The Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., on Friday, July 11 at 2:00 p.m. Special thanks to the staff at Extendicare Tuxedo Villa for their kindness, care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a charity of one's choice. THOMSON IN THE PARK 925-1120 Send expressions of sympathy to www.mem.com
