MATT (DMYTRO) DEREWIANCHUK Peacefully on July 10, 2008, surrounded by his loving wife and family, Matt (Dmytro) Derewianchuk journeyed to be with the angels after a lengthy illness. He will forever be lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Helen (Makowsky); his children, Susan (Don) Phillips, James (Maryanne), Katherine (Michael) Bially, Iris (Don) Goodfellow, Richard (Regina), Rachel (Barry) Hudson; 14 grandchildren, Reggie, Jeremy, Michael, Dallas, Nicholas, Tommy, Keith, Chelsea, Shelby, Mitchell, Madison, Hillary, Ashley and Chloe; one great-grandchild, Nicole and step grandchildren, Lana, Mickey and Kiersten. He is also survived by sisters and brothers, Mary (Kiziuk), Jarvis, Anne (Eugene) Podolsky, Elsie (Bill) Skryba, Steve (Iris), Jean (Ray) VanKooten, Nellie Diduck, Peter (Mariette), Alec (Eloise); sisters-in-law, Elma and Sara, Margaret Bordun, Anne Makowsky, Marie Bugera; brother-in-law Nick (Molly) Makowsky and many numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Matt was predeceased by parents, Alexander and Anastazia; brothers, Roland, Walter, Boris (Kay); sister, Stella (Matt) Kyrzyk; in-laws, Nykola and Anne Makowsky; brothers-in-law William, Peter, John, Mike and Wally. Dad was born August 8, 1930 in Vita. He loved people and started his working career at Vita Bakery. After the tornado Dad worked for Tolstoi Transfer. He then purchased his own truck and became a jobber for KUB, Weston's and Don's Bakery delivering bread in southeastern Manitoba. Dad worked hard starting his delivery runs at 3:30 a.m. To this he added a milk run, first with Co-op and then St. Pierre Dairies. In 1977 the family moved from Sundown and together with mom and son Jim, started a family grocery business Derewianchuk Sons Superette of which he was very proud. Dad strived hard to satisfy his customers. He was a lifelong member of the Sundown Catholic Church. Dad enjoyed cracking jokes, driving friends to bingo, playing cards and treating his family at his favorite Chinese restaurants. Most of all he just enjoyed being around his children and grandchildren. Prayers will be held Monday, July 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ukrainian National Home in Vita. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Sundown. Loving thanks to our devoted mother for providing Dad with so many opportunities to be part of this world when he could no longer do things on his own. Special thanks to the staff at Whispering Pine Lodge (Vita PCH) for the humor and loving care they provided him since August 2003. Dad loved little children and never wanted to see them hungry or suffering. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Ukrainian Canadian Social Services, 235 McGregor Street, Winnipeg, MB R2W 4W5.
