PEARL SELKIRK (nee JOHNSTON) August 8, 1940 - July 10, 2008 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, granny and great granny, Pearl Selkirk, of Pine Dock, MB. at the age of 67, after a courageous battle with cancer at the Gimli Community Health Centre, surrounded by her family. She leaves to mourn her passing her loving family; son Barry (Irene); daughters, Gwen (Murray) Olafson, Lorri (Michael) Monkman, Cheryl (Shawn) Loane, Dawn (Daryl) Monkman, Jacqueline (Richard) Monkman and Susan (Dean) Klatt; grandchildren, Wesley, Karla (Jamie), Robin (Kito), Sean (Tanya), Teri (Robin), Derek, Eldon, Tracy (Ryan), Nikki, Quentin (Jessica), Bradley, Tasha (Kevin), Tessa, Alycia and Tristan; great-grandchildren, Braden, Jayse, Leeland and Emmy Pearl. Also mourning are her brothers, Edgar and Louis (Joan); sisters, Millie (Frank), Sarah, Vangie (Cliff), Laverne (Eugene); sister-in-law Marge; aunt Aurelia as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband Charlie in 2004; parents, Eva and Alphonse Johnston; brothers, Bobby and Carl; brother-in-law Barney. Mom was born in Peguis on August 8, 1940. She grew up in Birch Point and Fisher Bay, she attended school in Matheson Island and Winnipeg. Mom married Dad on May 3, 1958 in Riverton and during their 46 years of marriage together they raised a family of seven children. Mom worked as assistant Post mistress before taking over solely as Post mistress in 1977. Mom also worked outside the home as a Home Care worker before retiring in 1994 to care for Dad. Mom volunteered her time within the community as a 4-H Leader, serving on the Pine Dock School Committee and as a Community Councilor until the time of her passing. Family was always very important to Mom and she enjoyed the noise and laughter around the dinning room table at family gatherings. Mom had several pastimes to keep her busy; she loved to sew and she made special outfits for each one of us; baking large batches of bread so each grandchild could take a loaf home; and she was always looking for a good book to read. But her favorite pastime was hockey, especially when it was one of her grandsons playing. Mom's grandchildren and great grandchildren were the center of her world, she so loved spending time with each one of them. At Mom's request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday July 17, 2008 at the Pine Dock Community Hall at 2 p.m., with Pastor Fred Peters officiating. Interment will follow at the Pine Dock Cemetery. The urn bearer will be Gwen Olafson. Honorary urn bearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We are grateful to our many relatives and friends for their support over the past 2½ years. Thank you to the following doctors: Dr. Latosinsky; Dr. Swallow and Dr. McGilvary and the Toronto Team; Dr. Wong, Dr. Akra, Dr. Daeninck, Dr. S.V. Patel and the staff at Gimli Community Health Centre for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba or Interlake Palliative Care Program. We thought we heard a sound Coming from all around A silent whisper or a shout We just couldn't make it out. As we wondered about this sound unknown, We suddenly knew it was Our Dad calling our Mom home Mom, Give Dad a hug for us. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements.
