Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE J. LIS 1919 - 2008 Surrounded by family, George quietly passed away at the Grace Hospital (Winnipeg) on July 15, 2008. George was born on Cambridge Street in Winnipeg on December 30, 1919. The son of Belgian immigrants Sidonie (Lievens) and Hilaire Lis, he was educated in St. Boniface at the Maison-Chapelle. As a young boy, George showed a great aptitude for sales by, among other things, breeding and selling rabbits and winning ticket-selling contests. This entrepreneurial spirit stayed with him throughout his life. When he was 21 years old, he volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force, serving as an airframe mechanic until the end of the Second World War. During this time, he met Mildred (née Price); they married in 1942 after a brief courtship. Following the War, George worked at Oakland Hatcheries until he decided to become a real estate broker in 1967. He excelled at this profession, and was an active member of the Winnipeg Real Estate Board until he retired at the age of 82. Throughout his life he enjoyed many hobbies, especially golfing, fishing (at Clear Lake and later, Lake of the Woods), and carpentry. He was also a loyal Freemason, a Shriner, and a member of the St. James Legion. George is survived by his wife Mildred, daughter Linda, son-in-law Dexter Boyd, grandsons Scott (Shilpa) and Matthew (Emma) Boyd, and great-granddaughter Hannah Boyd. He will also be missed by his Belgian cousins Sylvia Lis-Van Offel and Annemie Lievens. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Grace Hospital, especially Dr. Anthony Battad and Mr. George Bessas in 3-North. Their compassion and caring were greatly appreciated. We also thank the staff of the West Park Manor for the care provided to George in the past year. A service celebrating George's life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, on Monday, July 21, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to a charity of one's choice. Go softly into that good night and may angels guide you gently to your rest CHAPEL LAWN 885-9715
