Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMURIEL V. BROKKE (nee GOLDRING) It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our mother Muriel Victoria at Seven Oaks General Hospital on July 20, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband Johannes; granddaughter Leslie; sister Marion; brothers Edmund, Wesley and Kent, and parents Frank and Carlotta. She is survived by her daughter Myrna (Don) and son Joseph (Shirley). Also left to mourn are her grandchildren Glen (Kerry); Gary; Carmen and Scott and great-grandchildren J.D., Hayley and Devann. Muriel was born in Winnipeg on December 31, 1916. She moved to Middlechurch as a young child where she had many memorable times in the community. She was able to enjoy 29 wonderful years of retirement pursuing her interests in travel and family. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with all her family and maintained close relationships with all Goldring, Kent and Smith relatives as well as numerous close friends. Muriel enjoyed her association with the Manitoba Historical Society, Wednesday Morning Musicale, the Althea Shrine and the Hawthorne Club of North Kildonan. She attended lectures for seniors at the University of Winnipeg, and was a loyal fan of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Pop Concerts. Muriel was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be remembered for her kindness and thoughtfulness to her children, grandchildren and great-grand-children. Despite living long distance she constantly kept in touch through special cards and treats in the mail. She took great pride in accomplishments and stories of her many nieces and nephews. Muriel used her musical talents to help found the North Kildonan United Church in the late 1950s. The Lord Kitchener School Choir practices were often held in her home for the Sunday services. Muriel looked forward to the summer months and loved the outdoor atmosphere at her cottage at Big Whiteshell Lake where she enjoyed the friendship of neighbours in the area. She seemed to find treasures in all areas whether it be someone's rock garden, the beauty of a sunset or the fleeting glimpse of wildlife. She enjoyed life at her own pace which gave her time to enjoy her family, friends and neighbours. Muriel was a career minded person at a time when it was less than fashionable for women to pursue workplace ambitions. She began her work experience at Canada Post and ended her career with the Department of Manpower and Immigration. Muriel possessed a multitude of personal interests. She had a passion for gardening and loved to tend her flowers. She liked to think of her yard as her own park. She had a hunger for knowledge and one could count on her to be reading the Free Press from cover to cover. She had a great capacity for learning and displayed great curiosity for the world around her that remained unabated to the end. Every day she was visited in the hospital she wanted to know what was in the newspaper that day. Thanks are extended on Muriel's behalf for the many expressions of love and concern from relatives and friends; and to the staff of Concordia and Seven Oaks Hospital for their compassionate care. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Home 1897 Henderson Highway, North Kildonan. In lieu of flowers a memorial gift may be sent in Muriel's name to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 9Z9. Arrangements entrusted to: KLASSEN FUNERAL HOME 1897 Henderson Hwy. 338-0331 Send expressions of sympathy at www.mem.com
