DONALD BENJAMIN SMITH After a long and brave struggle with Alzheimers Disease, our beloved husband, father and grandfather Donald Benjamin Smith passed away peacefully at Meadowood Manor, July 29, 2008. Born August 6, 1922 in Greasbrough, England to Thomas Alfred and Louisa Smith, Donald and his family moved to Canada in 1923. He grew up in St. Vital and Norwood. He was predeceased by brother Alfred, sisters Madge and Ada. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Doris, children Susan (David), Darcy (Jennifer), grandchildren, his pride and joy, Megan, Makinda and Amira. Donald worked at the Canadian National Railway from 1940 until his retirement in 1987 after 47 years of service, the majority of his career working at Transcona Shops. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1942 1945 during World War II serving in Canada and on the High Seas. He advanced to Petty Officer Rank in 1942 and upon leaving the Navy in 1945, his rank was Engine Room Artificer 4th Class. Donald received medals and decorations for this period of service: 1939-1945 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and War Medal 1939-1945. He lost his brother Alfred in The Battle of The Atlantic in 1944. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy for a second time from 1952 1957 during the Korean War. He returned to Canadian National Railway after his two periods of service in the Navy. Donald was a long time member of the Norwood Legion. He volunteered with St. John Ambulance for a number of years working at the Winnipeg Arena during events. Upon his retirement from Canadian National Railway, he worked for the Canadian Corps of Commissioners at Minto Armory and 17 Wing. Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home, their kindness was much appreciated. Respecting Donald's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held. Interment will be at St. Vital Cemetery.
