ELMA AKINS (nee BLOCH) November 10, 1924 - August 2, 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elma Akins in her 83rd year at Victoria General Hospital, with her family at her side. Elma passed peacefully after bravely struggling for several years with neurodegenerative disease. Elma was predeceased by her husband Lawrence Akins in 1994. She is survived by her daughter Janice (Pat) Shamber of Abbotsford, BC and her son Allan (Margaret Marion) Akins of Oak Bank, MB. Elma is survived by five grandchildren, Michael, Nikki, Marie, Mathew and Mackenzie. She has seven great-grandchildren, Emerson, Dakota, Anton, Nelson, Raiya, Lincoln and Tristan. Elma was born at Beaconia, MB, the sixth girl of 13 children born to Julius Bloch, born in Russia in 1880 and Emilie (Schwark) Bloch, born in Niespodjanka, Russia in 1888. Of Elma's generation she is survived by brother Herman Bloch of Chilliwack, BC and sisters Nora Froehlich of Beausejour and Tillie Laba of Winnipeg. She is also survived by brother-in-law Harvey Akins of Winnipeg and sisters-in-law Phyllis Block and Marge Urso of Winnipeg. Elma has numerous cousins, nephews and nieces, both surviving and deceased. Elma, through contacts with the Young United Church, moved to Winnipeg at 17 and worked as a housekeeper. She then worked at The Canadian Wheat Board where she met Lawrence Akins. They were married in 1946 and started their family while living on Cauchon Street in Fort Rouge. The family moved to River Heights and Elma then worked at The Bay Credit Department for many years. Elma enjoyed many activities including cooking, sewing, crocheting, gardening and playing bridge. Her favourite activity was painting in all mediums. For many years she was an active member and granted a lifetime membership in the Saint James Art Club. In fact Elma became a successful accomplished artist. The family gives a special thank you to the staff on the fifth floor of Victoria General Hospital for their kindness and loving care. A celebration of Elma's life will be held at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, Winnipeg on Friday, August 8, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Breast Health Centre, 100-400 Tache Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R2H 3C3.
