LOUIS L. LEVINE May 23, 1918 August 3, 2008 On August 3, 2008, Lou Levine died, at age 90, after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife, Sophie, daughter, Naomi and her husband, Arthur Mauro, son Martin, grandson Bernard, sister Lil, and brothers, Howard and Phil. He was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Sarah (Duboff), his sister Bess, and brothers Maurice and Max. Lou's whole world was focused on his wife of 66 years. In their last few years together, they held hands all day, were never apart, and loved each other with as much affection and passion as they did 66 years ago. Lou took great pride in his children's accomplishments and made sure he knew all the details, for bragging purposes. In his early years, Lou was a partner with Harry Stuart, in Long's Hats menswear, on Portage Avenue. In his early 40s, he moved into real estate and became a highly successful commercial and land appraiser, working out of Aronovitch and Leipsic. After his retirement, he served as a member of the Tax Appeal Board. He was respected for his integrity and knowledge, enjoyed for his humour and appreciated by his numerous protégés, for his generosity in sharing with them his knowledge and experience. He was regularly called to court to give expert evidence. Lou was unflinching in his belief in hard work, contributing to his community and the survival of the State of Israel. He was an active member of B'nai Brith and the Masons (Menorah Lodge). As Lou's children, we learned the necessity of education, respect for peoples of all races and religions and, above all, to live an ethical life. We will keep him in our hearts with love, appreciation and smiles. We would like to express our thanks to the staff at the Sharon Home, for their care of Lou and their continuing care and support of Sophie. We also thank the doctors and nurses of Victoria Hospital for easing his last days. We also thank Rabbi Altein and the Congregation Etz Chaim for their assistance and support. Rabbi Altein led the service for Lou at the Chesed Shel Emes on Wednesday, August 6, with burial at the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery. One of Lou's great pleasures was playing with Naomi's dog, Fleur, who died in January, 2008. Every day, after her death, he talked about her and how he missed her. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society. Although in his last months Lou suffered from memory loss, he never forgot love. His last words to us were I love you , and those were our last words to him. We will miss him.
