NORMAN HALMARSON Peacefully, on Sunday, August 10, 2008, Norman John Halmarson passed away at the age of 86 years at his residence in Douglas Campbell Lodge, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Norm is lovingly remembered by his sons Doug (Jan) Halmarson of Portage la Prairie, MB, Don (Marjorie) Halmarson of Okotoks, AB, and Jim (Cindy) Halmarson of Saskatoon, SK, and grandchildren Erica (Ryan), Gillian (Andy), Sarah (Jason), and Danny (Sarah). Norm was born near Dafoe, SK on June 14, 1922. During his life he lived in Wynyard, Regina, Edmonton, Portage la Prairie, and Winnipeg. Norm was dedicated to his wife of 63 years, Eva, who passed away in May of this year. He was her constant care giver during the last years of her life, never wavering in his devotion to her despite his own ill health. Eva was the love of his life and following her death, Norm lost his purpose for living. Norm, though a quiet person by nature, excelled in his work as a manager because he always put others first, both staff and customers. Norm managed the Canadian Bible Society Bookstore in Winnipeg, the Information Canada Resource Centre in Winnipeg, and the PX at the RCMP Training Centre in Regina before retiring in 1984. Norm loved music, especially opera, and was an avid reader. He is most remembered for his generosity, not only towards his children and grandchildren, but towards the many charities that he supported. He was a longtime member of St. Stephen's - St. Bede's Church in Winnipeg, and served at St. Stephen's in many capacities and sang in the choir. Although afflicted with chronic pain, Norm was a blessing to all who encountered him. He was, as many remarked, a real sweetheart! The family wishes to thank the staff of Douglas Campbell Lodge and West Park Manor for their kindness and excellent care. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's - St. Bede's Church, 99 Turner Ave. in Winnipeg, with The Rev. Canon Richard Condo presiding. As expressions of thanksgiving for Norm's life, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Norm's memory to a charity of their choice.
