Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCURTIS TERRY ASSINIBOINE It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Curtis Assiniboine, aged 44, of Long Plains First Nation in Manitoba, Canada on Monday, August 11, 2008. The news of Curtis' death pierced the hearts of countless numbers of people across North America. So many were touched by his kindness, his compassion and his loving soul. He was predeceased by his father Jimmy and brothers Dennis, Kenneth, Harold and his twin brother Feralin (January 3, 1995). He leaves to treasure his memory his wife Ilona; children Preston (Jodi), Jayceen, Nina-Rae, Curtis Jr., Dion and Rachel; grandchildren Feralin, Eric and Alisha; mother Rosemary; siblings Keith Myran, Hank Hotain, Del (Sandra), Maggie, Joan (Ed), James (Trudy), Kathy (Felix), Lisa (Wallace) and Vernon (Shawna) Meeches and many nieces and nephews. Curtis was truly the voice of the people, in every way -- physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. He thought nothing of lending his support in his efforts to gather the people with his voice and extraordinary personality. In his life, he did this by engaging in his role as an emcee at numerous powwows across the continent for most of the last quarter of a century. Intuitively, he knew how to create structure and organization in the various communities he visited and in the magical ways he gathered the people. He always traveled with his Indian joke book in hand and was always ready to use it in the most appropriate ways to delight and entertain any audience he addressed. He was a storyteller, a comedian and all round beautiful person. Services will take place at the Long Plain School. The wake on Friday, August 15, 2008 with the Traditional Feast and Funeral to begin at 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 16, 2008. David Blacksmith and Frank Brown will be leading. The family considers all pow-wow singers and drummers as honourary pallbearers. The Pallbearers will be Vernon Meeches, David Meeches/Darren Cameron, Eddie Houle, George Assiniboine, Hank Hotain and Garnet Meeches. Burial will be in the Long Plain Cemetery. 857-4021 www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com

I can sing too. I am from Long Plain First Nation. Who could know such beautiful voices AS CURTIS AND FERLIN? - Posted by: Miss Beverly Jean Merrick (daughter to my late father, Mr. Max Merrick, Hereditary Chief ) on: Feb 02, 2021
