Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNICHOLAS DAVIDOWICH It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Nicholas Davidowich, 82 years of age, on August 10, 2008, at Grace Hospice, after a hard fought battle with cancer. Nick will be forever remembered by his daughters, Darcie Koshelanyk (Gord) and Shauna Wall (Don), his granddaughter Alexis Wall and his ex-wife Leah Smith of Winnipeg as well as his niece Nina Shevchenko (Wasyl), great-niece Alina Lastovenko (Aleksandr) and brother-in-law Mikhail Shevchenko (Nina) of Ukraine. He was predeceased by his mother Aleksandra, father Wasyl, brother Ihor, sister Valentyna and nephew Valeri. Nick was born, December 3, 1925, in the village of Atusha, Ukraine. He was the youngest of three children. Nick's early life was filled with hardship and heartbreak. He endured forced starvation, the loss of his father and brother and at the age of 16, he was taken from his home to work in a slave labour camp in Germany. He would not return home for 64 years and he would never again see his mother or sister. He was liberated in 1945 and immigrated to Canada in 1947. Nick landed in Halifax and worked hard earning a living and learning a new language. He made his way west, working as a bushman in logging camps in Thunder Bay and Kenora. While in Kenora, he began his 36 year career with Canada Safeway in 1954. In 1957, he was transferred to Neepawa, Manitoba to open the new store. It was there he met his wife, Leah. They were married in 1962, moved to Winnipeg and raised two daughters. Nick had two passions - cars and golf. His cars were always clean and shiny and ran like tops. He was an avid golfer and very proud, that at the age of 80, he could still walk 18 holes. We would like to extend our gratitude to Drs. Crowe and Johnson and the staff on 3E at Riverview and the staff at the Grace Hospice for their care and compassion. We would also like to sincerely thank our family and friends for their constant love and support. A celebration of Nick's life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, on Monday, August 18, 2008 at 3:00 p.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nick's memory to Grace Hospice, in care of Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3J 3M7. Vichnaya Pamyat CHAPEL LAWN 885-9715
