UWE HOFMANN Suddenly on August 12, 2008 on the outskirts of Winnipeg. Uwe will be terribly missed. Left to celebrate his all-too-short life are his best friend and devoted partner Elizabeth, his dear brother Steffen (Joanna) and their children, Edyn and Lily, who always looked forward to seeing their favourite uncle, his sister Evelyn (Jens) and their son Nils, Uwe's parents Horst and Edith in Leipzig, and of course Uwe's extended family, the Dahls, and uncles, Richters, Peuckert, and the Turchyn family. Uwe's self-deprecating sense of humor, his wry smile and the twinkle in his eye put everyone at ease and made him just plain lovable. He could elicit belly laughs from total strangers. He was a generous and gentle soul who loved all living things, especially Fritz and Peanut (whom he rescued from the highway). And even though he was not a cat person he came to love Fussel, Mozart and Fledermaus. In good times and bad, Uwe was always there for Elizabeth. Uwe was born in Leipzig, East Germany in 1959 and in 1990 after the wall came down, he came to Canada with Steffen to seek new opportunities. He was a gifted cabinet-maker, as his home décor will attest. An injury forced him to abandon woodworking as a career, so he retrained as a semi truck driver. Uwe saw more of North America than most North Americans ever will. Uwe and Elizabeth met 13 years ago and they have laughed and shared their lives together ever since. He could fix anything. He could build anything and he would help anyone who asked - or even those who didn't. Uwe was a hard working man who was well liked and respected amongst his workmates. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 22 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg. Without doubt, amidst the tears there will be irreverence and laughter, because Uwe's bright spirit lives on in all of us who loved him. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Humane Society or The Multiple Sclerosis Society in Uwe's name. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall in care of arrangements
