LLOYD GORDON PETERS Peacefully, and with family by his side, Lloyd Peters passed away on August 12, 2008 at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg. Lloyd was predeceased by his loving wife Alma, in 2007, and is survived by his sons Robert (Jennifer) and James (Kimberly) and grandchildren Erin, Laura, David, Riley, and Alexa. Lloyd was born in Winnipeg on December 26, 1922, the last of eight children born to Alexander and Katherine Peters. He grew up in the city's north end, attending St. John's High School and the University of Manitoba after the war. He was just 18 when he enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force, eventually becoming the Pilot Officer of a Lancaster bomber - flying many sorties over war-torn Europe. Shot down over France in 1943, he and the plane's rear-gunner were the only survivors. Breaking his leg on landing, Lloyd recuperated in an enemy hospital for months before being interred in several POW camps. He and his fellow servicemen were liberated by General Patton's Third Army in the spring of 1945. Returning to Winnipeg after the war, he worked as a salesman for a variety of businesses in Winnipeg and eventually, Calgary and Edmonton. While in Winnipeg, he met and married Alma Gellert in 1953. Soon after, the couple moved to Edmonton, where their two sons, Robert and James, were born. They returned to Winnipeg soon after, locating in Fort Garry. During those years, Lloyd held a variety of sales jobs and eventually retired from Sears at Polo Park. Lloyd was a kind, generous, and unpretentious person who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A private family graveside service has been held.
