ELLEN (HELEN) BADIUK (nee OLYNYK) March 5, 1922 - August 11, 2008 After an evening celebrating her 58th wedding anniversary with her beloved Bill, family and friends, Ellen passed away suddenly at home the morning of August 11, 2008. Ellen will be remembered by her husband, Bill, daughter Vienna (Joe), and son, Doug (Carrie), sisters - Mary Drumlevitch, Vivian Banks, and brother Joe (Jean), sister-in-law, Margaret, numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family and many friends. The oldest sister in a large and boisterous family, Ellen left Sundown, Manitoba at the age of 17, to begin her teaching career in Northern Manitoba, later British Columbia and eventually Winnipeg. The consummate teacher, she treated her students to homemade cookies, and could be counted on to be the first one to volunteer to take the classroom's white rats home for the weekends. After she retired, she could rarely be found at home. She volunteered at the Manitoba Museum and was a member of the Elder Tales Dramatic Readers. Her interests included decoupage, tai chi, reflexology and pattern dancing. After her stroke in 1999, she carried on as best she could, pursuing her areas of interest, while continuing to hone her teaching skills by correcting the grammatical deficiencies of anyone who came within earshot. The centre of all family functions, she will be greatly missed. Ellen will be remembered at a service on Monday, August 18, at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, 586-8044. Viewing at 10:30 a.m. Service at 11:00 a.m. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or the Winnipeg Humane Society. Vichnaya Pamyat
