Joy was born at the farm northwest of Crandall on February 20, 1918. She was the second of six children born to Mary Luna and Daniel Cowling. Joy leaves to cherish her memory sisters, Pauline Farquhar (Port Coquitlam, BC) and Marie Arnold (Birtle, MB); daughters, Shona (Ken) Peel of Swan River and (Donna) Lynn of Brandon; grandchildren, Nicole (Cameron) Wiebe of Edmonton, Rachelle (Rob) Prince of Brandon, Christine Lelond of Saskatoon, Darren (Brandi) Peel of Taber, AB, Blair (Jennifer) Peel of Salmo, BC, and Kristopher Lelond of Brandon; great-grandchildren, Cadon, Zarek, Aaliyah, Morgan, Dareon, Peyton, Austin, Gwendalyne, and Brittan, as well as many nieces and nephews. Joy was predeceased by her parents, Louie and Dan Cowling; sisters, Grace Cowling and Viola (Eddie) Lakatos; brother Bill (Wilma) Cowling; husband Russell Lelond and son Dennis Lelond. Joy worked in the offices of Ashdown's Department store after graduation. In 1948 she married Russell Francis Lelond and consequently moved to the farm east of Miniota. She was a very active person. Her younger years were filled with gardening, berry picking, baking pies and buns, and chasing after three children. In later years she was famous at the Hamiota swimming pool for her great dives. She was an avid curler, competing in the Senior Ladies Provincials. She learned how to golf and cross-country ski during her retirement. Joy loved small children and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave her much pleasure in her last years. Just before her 80th birthday, Joy suffered a severe stroke which left her unable to communicate with spoken or written word. She continued on her own for several years before concluding her life at the Birch Lodge in Hamiota. She enjoyed the excellent staff who played a big part in making her last years fun. The funeral took place on Friday, August 8, 2008 at the Hamiota United Church with Reverend Heather Robbins officiating. Interment followed at Arrow River cemetery. Those wishing to remember Joy may do so with a gift to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Birch Lodge Activity Fund, the Hamiota golf, swimming or curling clubs. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Campbell Funeral Home of Hamiota.
