EDITH SPITTAL (nee DUCK) HONOURED educator, Edith Spittal, died peacefully at Six Nations Reserve with her husband at her side, Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. She was a beautiful woman who had much more to give this world. Despite her battles with breast cancer, she remained cheerful, and continued to provide many people with life lessons and support. Edith had a large family, hundreds of close friends, thousands of supporters. She married the love of her life, Shawnee Spittal who was her rock and pillar through her life and always supported her desire to live life to the fullest. Edith is survived by her seven siblings, Jim, Ann, Dan, Gunner, Ruby, Gina and previously deceased brother Tony, grew up in Dene Village (Churchill, MB) and Tadoule Lake. Her father, Fred Duck, was a leader in the migration of the Sayisi Dene people, which gave her strength and honour. Her mother, Mary, is a homemaker who stood to be a major strength for all of her children. She was very close to her sister Ann (B.SW) who achieved her dream and her cousin Christine Carpenter (RN) who also influenced her by what they were able to achieve by educating themselves. Ann's words to her sister: My dear Sista E.! I will miss you so much, you don't know how much my heart is aching and I am in deep sorrow and grief. Although I was prepared, one thing I didn't know is that you were going to leave us on my birthday. You always celebrated my birthday like it was your birthday. You'd surprise me with many beautiful gifts and roses that I will cherish for the rest of my life. You are a unique woman, a sister who is irreplaceable, your roaring laughter still echoes in my mind. Your loving smile and sparkle in your eyes when I baked your favourite homemade cakes and pies is firmly in my memories. May you rest in peace. I will meet you some day, somewhere over the rainbow where the roses never fade. I love you with all my heart.
