JESSIE LALIBERTE 1918 - 2008 With sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Jessie Laliberte, on August 22, 2008 at Victoria Hospital, Winnipeg after a long and happy life. Jessie was born in Mossend, Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1918. At the age of nine she and her younger brother Tom accompanied parents, James and Janet McKelvie on the long trip to Kenora, in 1927. Following public school Jessie took business and secretarial classes then worked for several years in the office of the Woolworths store in Kenora. She took pride in her penmanship and later used these skills as secretary of the St. Louis School PTA. Jessie married John Laliberte an operator with the CPR, in 1944. Thereafter the Railway was always a big part of their lives. It was their livelihood, the source of so many stories and characters: and so many lasting friendships. Thankfully, the Railway also led them to the people and the fun of Hawk Lake. John and Jessie enjoyed raising their family of five boys. They loved their summers at the Lake. They enjoyed belonging to the Curling Club and were avid supporters of the Norman Community Club. Mom and Dad celebrated their 50th Anniversary together at Hawk Lake in June 1994. Mom was a great homemaker and fantastic cook. Her baking is legendary! Her dinners were amazing. The door was always open at home with a bowl of soup waiting for the weary passer-by. Mom will always be remembered as a kind and generous lady. In 1974, John and Jessie were transferred to Winnipeg. They took up residence in Windsor Park where they were so fortunate to meet and enjoy many great neighbours. At that time Mom rekindled her faith at Windsor Park Baptist Church. Jessie was predeceased by her husband John in 1998, by her son Kevin in 1987, and by her brother Tom (Edna) in 2004. She is lovingly remembered by her son Noel (Rae) of Montreal; granddaughters, Amanda and Lauren and their families; son Denis (Karen) of Winnipeg; granddaughter Shannon; son David (Wendy) of Kenora; grandson Elijah (Aleigha); and son Tommy of Calgary. She is also dearly missed by her niece Shaughn McKelvie (Wayne Leduc) of Kenora; her brotherin-law Paul Caron (Therese) of Kenora and family; her sister-in-law Berthe Roger (Archie) of Hamilton and family; her cousin Cathy (Cece) Foster of Kenora and family; as well as numerous family, friends, and acquaintances from far and wide. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, with Rev. Lorne Meisner officiating. Interment and reception to follow immediately. Our deepest thanks go out to the professional staff at The Victoria Hospital and the wonderful caring staff of Rosewood Village. In lieu of flowers please consider the charity of your choice.
