ELIZA GUERREIRO SOARES June 1, 1925August 22, 2008 It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend on August 22, 2008 at the Riverview Health Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Remaining to cherish Eliza's memory are children, Ilidio Soares, Maria Mealha (Mario), Bernard Soares, Jeannie Soares-Kukelko (David); grandchildren, Marilyn and Mario Mealha and Meghan Kukelko and great-grandson Sebastien Manaigre. Eliza was predeceased by her husband Isidoro in 1986. Eliza was born in the town of Alte in Algarve, Portugal. We will always cherish Mom's stories about her childhood with her seven siblings. Mom married her beloved Isidoro in April 1945. Dad immigrated to Canada in 1960. Mom and her children followed to be with Dad in 1962. Mom worked as a seamstress and at HSC as an aide. She always spoke fondly of the friends she made at work. Mom and Dad had planned an early retirement. In 1984 they purchased a condo in Portimao, Algarve. Unfortunately, Dad passed away before they could share their dream together. However, with her children and grandchildren Mom enjoyed many summers in Portugal. She loved showing us her childhood places and especially loved time on the beach Praia da Rocha with her family. In mom's later years much of her joy came from spending time with her grand daughter Meghan and great grandson Sebastien. She especially loved going to their music, dance recitals and Christmas concerts. Towards the end of mom's life she was diagnosed with Cancer. Throughout her journey, she showed endless courage, dignity and strength. Our family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. James Johnston and Erin Elphee, along with all the wonderful people at Cancer Care Manitoba. As well, we would like to thank Home care, and the amazing team of Angels at 3 East Palliative Care at the Riverview Health Center. Thank-you Dr. St. Godard and Dr. McClure for making mom's journey dignified. The compassion shown to our family cannot be put into words. A funeral mass will be held on August 28, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Brebeuf, 1707 John Brebeuf with Monsignor Ward Jamieson presiding. Internment to follow at the Assumption Cemetery at 3990 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Eliza's memory to Cancer Care Manitoba. Chapel Lawn 885 - 9715
