ALFRED (AL) EDWARD STIMPSON Peacefully and surrounded by his family, Al passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at the age of 84 years. Remaining to forever cherish Al's memory are his loving wife Janet (Bains) of 59 years of marriage; children Ross (Shirley), Paul (Elaine), Julie (Tom); and his precious granddaughter Lauren Peake; his brothers Doug and Bob; sisters Ellen and Lucy, nephews and nieces and their families. He was predeceased by his father, George and mother Mary-Ellen; brothers George and Dick; and sisters Edna, Bea, and Hilda. Born February 15, 1924 in Winnipeg, Al enlisted in The Royal Canadian Air Force in the Second World War and earned a commission with the rank of Flying Officer. He served as a Wireless Air Gunner with the Eastern Coastal Command. After the war he obtained his certification in fur design in New York and spent much of his early career designing and manufacturing fur coats in Winnipeg. The majority of his career was spent as a buyer and manager for Eaton's western Canada fur division. Al was a member of St. Bede's church for many years and volunteered in many capacities with the church. Al truly loved spending time with his family and took special pleasure in those times with his granddaughter Lauren. Al had a love for news, history and current events and frequently liked to debate issues. He particularly valued the many friendships he had acquired in the Jewish community as a result of his involvement in the fur industry. Al treasured antique furniture and loved golfing, cooking and gardening. Prior to his illness, he devoted most of his spare time helping friends, family and church members with various tasks. Al had a flair for design and particularly loved doing jobs which involved painting and decorating. Al's presence will be truly missed by family and close friends. Al's funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Stephen's St. Bede's Church, 99 Turner Ave. (corner of Mount Royal Road and Ness Avenue), Winnipeg, with Rev. Richard Condo, presider. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Zoheir Bshouty and his staff at the Health Science Centre for their outstanding and compassionate care to Al over the years, and to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the St. Boniface Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Al's memory to the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Ave. Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3A 1P6, or to a charity of your choice.
