FREDERICK RALPH HAYES October 13, 1924 - August 30, 2008 Peacefully and surrounded by his family, in his 84th year, Ralph was called Home into the presence of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ on August 30, 2008 at Victoria General Hospital. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of sixty years, Jane; his children Janice (John), Glenn (Laurie), Geoffrey (Barbara), Mary Jane, Donna (Rick), Arlene (Steve), Philip (Barbara), Paul and Leslie (Carey); his grandchildren Beth (Dean), Jamie (Rochelle), Christopher, Kevin, Lisa, Catherine, Laura, Matthew, Tiffany, Jeremy and Justin and great-granddaughter August; his younger brothers who are honorary pallbearers, Gerald (Jean), Lloyd (Sarina) and John; and extended family and friends. Ralph was pre-deceased by his parents James and Hazel Hayes; his first-born infant son Mark; sisters-in-law Kay and Helen; and nieces Ruth, Esther and Susan. Ralph was born and raised in Winnipeg and graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute in 1941 and took employment at the City of Winnipeg Finance Department. His tenure there was interrupted by voluntary service in the Royal Canadian Air Force from August 1943 to March 1946. His postings included a number of Canadian locations but he had special memories of a year spent near Charlottetown, P.E.I. He left the employment of the City of Winnipeg in 1951 and spent the balance of his career at Air Canada (formerly Trans-Canada Airlines) in the capacity of Supervisor of Revenue Accounting. He retired in December, 1981. Ralph was known by all as a man of profound faith and sterling character, having put his trust in the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age. He served in various leadership roles at Ebenezer Gospel Hall (later Arlington Street Gospel Chapel) and attended Church of The Way and, latterly, Oxford Bible Church. His faith informed every aspect of his life and had a lasting effect on those he came in contact with. Ralph loved his family deeply and was especially devoted to his dear wife Jane, having just celebrated their Diamond Anniversary on May 29. In return, his family cherishes the peerless example of his life, his depth of character and his unique sense of humour. He was an avid reader and took keen interest in politics and current events. Ralph was a man of integrity and a true gentleman and was respected by his colleagues for his honesty and fairness. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude and thanks to the staff of Victoria General Hospital, especially Emergency Room Nurse Jeanette and Unit Five North Nurse Leigh and Drs. Bosco and Lipson for their compassionate care. A memorial service and reception celebrating Ralph's life will be held on Thursday, September 4 at 3:00 p.m. at Oxford Bible Church (621 Oxford Street at Fleet). If desired, contributions may be made in Ralph's memory to Scripture Union, Canadian Bible Society or Victoria General Hospital Foundation. We'll miss you dearly and love you forever. For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Philippians 1:21 Arrangements by Chapel Lawn 885-9715
