RONALD GORDON BANTING Peacefully at home on September 3, 2008, Ronnie passed away surrounded by loving family and friends. He will be sadly missed by sister Margaret (Peter) Munn, and their family Kimberly and Grace Moore, Jodi, Corey, and Tyler Munn, partner Donna Banting, relatives and numerous friends. Ronnie was born July 27, 1942, in Flin Flon, MB. He lived his early years in Fort William, ON, and moved to Winnipeg in 1953. His love of railroading developed at an early age as he travelled by himself between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. His adventures continued on, taking him to Comox, BC with the Sea Cadets, and in later years to many overseas destinations. After retirement, he volunteered with the Vintage Locomotive Society, where he enjoyed his time working on the Prairie Dog Central as a conductor, and restoring the vintage coaches. When he wasn't riding the real train he could be found running his extensive model railway. During his 36 years with MTS he worked out of the Steinbach office, installing dial telephones in much of the surrounding rural area. The last 15 years of his career were spent in Winnipeg. He was an energetic organizer, starting up the teen dances at Crescentwood Community Club as a youth. He also arranged ski trips and suitcase parties at the Winnipeg Ski Club, where he developed many lifelong friendships. Holding his Private Pilot's license, he was also a member of the Winnipeg Flying Club for several years. In addition, the Masonic organization played a big part in his life, where he held several offices in later years. Throughout his life, he was always there to help whenever needed, and was generous with his time and energy. He was known as a good friend with a kind heart, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Monday, September 8, 1:30 p.m. at Harrow United Church, corner of Mulvey Avenue at Harrow Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, or to the Prairie Dog Central Railway (Vintage Locomotive Society, PO Box 33021 RPO Polo Park, Winnipeg, MB, R3G 3N4).
