LENA STEVENSON October 27, 1918 - September 7, 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother Lena Stevenson. Mom passed away peacefully at Maples Personal Care Home at the age of 89 with her family by her side. She leaves to cherish her memory her three children: Jim (Kathy), Brenda (Paul) and Gail (Craig). Mom is also lovingly remembered by her six grandchildren, Kyle, Shawna (Chris) Ryan, Christopher, Curtis and Keith. Also remembered by sisters Greta Lohr, Irene Schwark and brother Hartley Schwark, brother-in-law Sam Taetz and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her parents Gertie and Gottlieb, her stepmother Maria Rosentreter, her husband Art, an infant sister Marlene and sisters Eve Taetz and Edith Mitchell. Mom was born in Morris, MB one of three children born to Gertie and Gottlieb Schwark. After the untimely passing of her mother Gertie, her father married Maria and she was blessed with three more sisters and a brother. Mom grew up in Morris and enjoyed helping her Dad with the various outdoor chores. She loved sports, her favourites being baseball and tennis. She met and married Art Stevenson in 1942 and after moving from place to place while he served in the R.C.A.F., they eventually bought property and built a home in Charleswood. Mom became a member of the Charleswood United Church and her strong faith was a source of strength to her throughout her life. Mom took pride in her home and loved flowers and gardening and their home took on a park like setting. Mom and Dad celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary and when Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Mom was devoted to his care until his death in 1994. Mom was an exceptional cook and was known to her grandchildren for her fabulous Gramma Corn. We have many treasured memories of family gatherings and the wonderful meals she prepared lovingly every Sunday for years. Mom worked hard, was very independent, unselfish and her home was a place where friends were always welcome. Mom was a devoted mother who you could always count on, who always put our needs before hers. She was committed to her family and friends, helping wherever she could. She was a wonderful grandmother and was very proud of her six grandchildren. They were very special to mom and she loved them dearly. Mom left a legacy of love and values to pattern our lives. She lived life to what she believed was right, and she knew no barriers. Special thanks to the staff at the Maples Personal Care Home for their compassionate care, to Gwen Hobbs for all her support in the last months of Mom's life and to her brother Hartley who was always there for her when we could not be. Mom was also very thankful for the many years of wonderful friendships she shared with Irene Stephens, Dorothy Lindsay and Edna Tustin and the fellowship she enjoyed at Charleswood United Church. We are very grateful for all the visits she received from family and friends during Mom's illness - always a bright spot in her day! Mom - Your life was full of loving deeds. Forever thoughtful of our special needs, Today and tomorrow, our whole lives through, we will always love and cherish you. A celebration of Mom's life will be held on Friday, September 12, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., with a reception to follow.
