Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN W. HIEBERT January 2, 1920 - September 7, 2008 Surrounded by his family, John passed through the Pearly Gates of Heaven to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy (nee Thiessen), his daughter Carole (Al) Backman, British Columbia and son Tom (BJ Betty), Winnipeg. He will be missed greatly by his cherished granddaughters Karen (Chris) McCloskey, Singapore, Erika (Mark) Ahnert and Andrea (Gian) Galasso, British Columbia. He also leaves great-grandchildren Kalena and Alexa McCloskey; Megan and Rebecca Ahnert; and Rory Galasso. He looked forward to being reunited in Heaven with his daughter and granddaughter Jeanette and Kimberley Gusto. Only two out of 12 of his siblings remain; Abe (Verna), Winkler and Katherine Davies, British Columbia. Born in Horndean and moving numerous times, he attended many different schools, but was always an excellent student. In his early years he worked for Sam Rosner on the Rose farm. Married in 1941, John and Dorothy began their family and moved to Winnipeg in 1943 where he was employed at various jobs until he formed his own J. Hiebert Trucking firm. In 1961 John and Dorothy bought a farm at Sanford where they enjoyed 21 years of country life. With retirement from farming came a move back to the city. However he first had to spend three months in hospital in traction due to a slip on ice. Plans to build a house had to be revised, but a house of a similar design was found in Tuxedo. This became their home for the next 15 years. In 1997 the move to a condo was made. Here they enjoyed 11 years. Dad always had an interest in woodworking. Over the years he became a master craftsman and wood turner. He bestowed many with his one-of-a kind items. These were made lovingly and are greatly treasured gifts. In his early 20s he developed a relationship with the Lord which grew and strengthened throughout his years, right to his dying breath. He lived out his faith touching many people's lives. His last days were spent in praise and confidence in God's promises, eagerly anticipating eternity in God's presence. We will miss him sorely. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford Street, Winnipeg with viewing prior to the service. Interment in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Grace General Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, R3J 3M7 or a charity of one's choice.
