Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCORPORAL MICHAEL JAMES ALEXANDER SEGGIE It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden death of Corporal Michael James Alexander Seggie on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 while in Afghanistan, at the age of 21. He leaves behind to mourn his passing his dad and mom, Jim and Shirley, his sister Michelle (Mat), and his nephew Carson. Mike was predeceased by his sister Kimberly, his grandfather Keith Seggie as well as his Uncle Terry Sorenson. Also mourning his loss are his grandparents, Jim and Betty Sorenson and Jean Seggie along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and many very close friends. Mike was born in Calgary, Alberta on the 22nd of November 1986 where he lived for three years. The family then moved back to Winnipeg where they still reside. Mike attended Jameswood Elementary School, Golden Gate Middle School and graduated from John Taylor Collegiate in 2004. During his life, Mike forged many enduring friendships. Mike loved his family and he and his friends always attended all family functions, including sleigh rides, summer picnics and all special occasions. He treasured the times he visited with his sister Michelle, brother-in-law Mat and nephew Carson. Mike always loved to be surrounded by all of his family and tried to include all of his friends for the family get-togethers. Mike made sure that his friends became part of the family. Mike was always on the lookout for a good time, or maybe the good times were on the lookout for Mike. His smile was infectious and even from an early age he made people laugh. Mike loved playing baseball. He played for the St. James A's and was a great player although he wouldn't admit it. He also liked to play hockey for fun with his many friends and played on the Royal Winnipeg Rifles (Lil Black Devils). Mike's first exposure to military life was when he joined 191 Air Cadet Squadron in Kapyong Barracks. Mike joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in June of 2004. He completed his Basic Military, Soldier, Basic Infantry and Infantry Platoon Support Weapons Qualifications prior to his joining the Regular Force in March of 2006. Mike trained in Wainwright with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry prior to being posted to the Second Battalion Light Infantry in Shilo, Manitoba. Mike always said that he'd go to the Second Battalion as that is where his dad served for many years. During his short time with the Second Mike went on several courses, including LAV Driver and Communications and finally on operations with the Second in February 2008. While on operations, Mike was promoted to Corporal and received the Canadian Expeditionary Force Commander's Commendation for his actions on March 27th, 2008. Mike enjoyed the military lifestyle. He adapted very quickly to military discipline and was a quick learner who rarely had to be taught anything twice. Mike really admired his Section and would often talk of Sgt. Perry and his latest military exploits. Mike was a HERO who loved life and lived it to the fullest. His life was full of adventure and he inspired others to live life the same way. He was a man of integrity, bravery and had a character like no other. A celebration of Mike's life will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Minto Armouries at 969 St. Matthews Ave., Winnipeg MB. Previous to this there will be a small private viewing at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel in Stonewall at 7:00 p.m. for family and close friends only.
